Sophie Fiennes’ immersive and exquisite documentary bears witness to German artist Anselm Kiefer’s alchemical creative processes and reveals the personal universe he has built at his hill studio estate, La Ribaute. Traversing this landscape, the film immerses the audience in the world and creative process of one of today’s most significant and inventive artists. Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow gives privileged access to Kiefer’s last days at his estate in the South of France prior to his move to Paris, where he now lives and works.

Shot in Cinemascope, the film constructs visual set pieces alongside observational footage to capture both the dramatic resonance of Kiefer’s art and the intimate process of creation. This polarity — in terms of scale, sensibility and time — animates the film, creating a multilayered narrative through which we navigate the complex spaces of La Ribaute.

Tom Hall for IndieWIRE described Fiennes’ film as “a major accomplishment, the rare nonfiction film that pulls off the feat of revealing the complexity of its subject.” Beautiful and meditative, Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow leads audiences through a wonderland of hypnotic visuals.

Sophie Fiennes worked with filmmaker Peter Greenaway for about five years and managed choreographer Michael Clark from 1993 to 1995. She began making her own films in 1998 and is widely acclaimed for her unique observational eye and strong sense of cinematic form. Previous films include her infamous The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema, a film collaboration with radical thinker Slavoj Žižek.
