Running Time: approximately 60 minutes

Matreyek performs in a multimedia production using projected animation she has created. Her silhouette becomes an integral part of a fantastical world. She traverses oceanscapes and cityscapes as she conjures magical domestic scenes with light and shadow. She becomes an island, walks among illuminated buildings, and ducks colored creatures dropping from the sky. What the viewer sees on the screen is a collapsed product of multiple layers of animation, objects and body, dissolving the barriers between the real and the illusory.

Matreyek earned her master’s degree in experimental animation at CalArts, where Dreaming of Lucid Living (2007) was her final project. She describes it as “an exploration of shadow and animation and themes of domestic spaces, large and small cities, magical powers.” Dreaming of Lucid Living won the Princess Grace Award for Film, as well as two awards at the Platform International Animation Festival: Student Grand Prix and Audience Choice Award for Best Installation.

Matreyek will perform Dreaming of Lucid Living and her newest animated performance, Myth and Infrastructure (2010), and screen several of her animated films. Created with support from the Princess Grace Special Project Grant and a Seed Grant provided by Under The Radar Festival, Myth and Infrastructure was performed at TEDGlobal 2010 in Oxford, England. Music is by Anna Oxygen, Caroline Lufkin and Mirah.
