Pina is a film for the late Pina Bausch, a renowned German choreographer who developed a revolutionary mixture of dance and theatre, influencing international choreographers and affecting both theater and classical ballet. The worldwide success of Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal was partly because she made a universal need her core issue: the need for love, for closeness and for security.
Director Wim Wenders takes the audience on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery into a new dimension — straight onto the stage with the legendary ensemble — and follows the dancers out of the theater into the city and the surrounding areas of Wuppertal, the home and center for Pina Bausch’s creativity for the past 35 years.
Time Out London says, “The beauty of Wenders’ film is that his imagery and gaze on Bausch’s work has the same essential, uncluttered and wryly funny quality as the work itself.”
During more than 20 years of personal friendship, Wenders and Bausch never lost sight of their idea to make a dance film together. But only recently, with the latest 3D technology, did Wenders find the aesthetic means to bring the unique plasticity and emotional expressiveness of Pina Bausch’s innovative Tanztheater to the cinema screen.
Wim Wenders ranks among the most important directors of world cinema and is one of the leading representatives of “New German Film.” Some of his previous films include Buena Vista Social Club, Wings of Desire and Land of Plenty.
